Darlene Olivia McElroy:
Darlene is a contemporary artist whose focus is narrative art. An author and educator of international renown, Darlene was born and raised in California and is descended from an old New Mexico family of artists and storytellers. She has been deeply influenced by the summers she spent growing up on her family's ranch in Santa Fe, where the rich tapestry of Hispanic life filled her brightly colored days and magical nights.
Darlene approaches a painting like a puzzle waiting to be solved, shifting the puzzle pieces until they resonate, giving new meaning to the elements through their juxtaposition. For the viewer, the experience is like reading Turkish coffee grounds – as one looks at the surface, a story is revealed through painted texture, color, and imagery. To express her vision, Darlene works with a variety of media, including acrylics, collages, paint skins, and image transfers. She draws on her multicultural DNA and extensive travels to create and inform her narratives.
