Mask: A manner or expression that hides
one's true character or feelings; a pretense.
one's true character or feelings; a pretense.
Máscara – Masked/Unmasked, Darlene McElroy and Paul White present two distinct artistic approaches for exploring the concept of the mask as pretense. McElroy examines masked/unmasked with mixed media paintings and assemblages that explore a largely symbolic narrative. Her work evokes an immediate sense of curiosity and immersion, drawing the viewer into a web of disparate, seemingly unrelated ideas that demand interpretation. Paul White delves into the world of the masked with multi-colored fused dichroic glass masks that evoke a fantasy world of unbridled luminance, such as one might experience at Mardi Gras or Carnival. The vibrance inherent in the glass provides each piece with a luxuriant interplay of color and light, especially when viewed from different angles.

Using a variety of media – rusted metal parts, found objects, ephemera, and cast objects – Darlene McElroy's paintings and assemblages present a largely symbolic narrative. Her work evokes an immediate sense of curiosity and immersion, drawing the viewer into a web of disparate, seemingly unrelated ideas that demand interpretation. The more time you spend with the art, the more it becomes part of your personal story.
