This exhibition represents the work of an artist whose artistic career was never fully realized. In 1956, Sharp was named by Art in America as one of the outstanding young artists of that year. Health issues and, perhaps, a desire for a secluded life, created a situation where he did not receive much recognition in the mainstream art world.
In 1966, H. Joe Waldrum arranged for a show to promote the work of Sharp at the McNay Art Institute in San Antonio, Texas. The director of the McNay at that time, John Palmer Leeper, made the following comments about Sharp and his work: “First of all, he is an intensely private artist… His painting are private diagrams, firm abstractions on the one hand and illusive, amorphous surfaces of color on the other… Throughout there is an abiding concern with textures and a free use of various media. The almost painful process of painting is paralleled by great bravura in the pen and wash drawings, which are immediately beguiling.”
Sharp started painting as a child. He exhibited watercolors while in high school and did cartoons for Yank Magazine while serving on a submarine during World War II. He became the first person to study art under the GI Bill after the war. He studied under Boardman Robinson, Otis Dozier and Edgar Britton. He won prizes as a student and was exhibited by the Library of Congress in three cities. In 1956, he was named by the magazine Art in America as one of the outstanding young artists of that year.
This show of approximately four dozen works by Sharp is truly a unique opportunity to see a rare collection of exceptional art.
