The show is a suite of paintings, oil on canvas, as well as varied selections of works on paper. The works on paper incorporate a variety of mixed media techniques including collage. The works on paper operate under the premise of a free space for spontaneous decision. In this series by Mr. Montreuil, he approaches individual works so that chance or indeterminate action occur throughout the journey to a final goal. The process of working to a final goal is a constant state of flux, adjustments, and “calculated micro decisions”. Mr. Montreuil had a very successful art career in New York City for over thirty years. He continues his artistic endeavors these days as he splits his time between Arrey, NM, and Marseille France.
Throughout his career, Mr. Montreuil has a explored a variety of concepts and techniques for his artistic creations. Much of his early work explored the concept of interstitial spaces. During his New York City years, he often relied on a limited color palette of black, white, and gray. In recent years in, he delved headfirst into the use of color and created a series “Wrestling with Color”. An important creative phase for Mr. Montreuil involved both paintings that demanded a very short completion time and great spontaneity and art pieces representing very precise and time-consuming assembly. Mr. Montreuil’s works can be found at The National Gallery in Washington, D.C., Yale University in New Haven, CT, The Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford CT, The Witherspoon Museum in Greensboro, NC, The Rourke Museum in Moorhead MN, The Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, NM, and in private collections.
