The German philosopher Walter Benjamin wrote, "color is something spiritual, something whose clarity is spiritual so that when colors are mixed they produce nuisances of color, not a blur." Montreuil delves into the complexity of color with a mix of analysis, intuition and intention. Unafraid, Montreuil works toward the dynamic of freedom and control using several approaches as necessary. While this depersonalizes his autographic signature, it allows him to express in the work a spiritual unity. Along with his contemporaries, Montreuil deals with the historical implications of classical abstraction but remains open to the necessity of
inventing new parameters for the future of painting.
inventing new parameters for the future of painting.
Throughout his career, Mr. Montreuil has a explored a variety of concepts and techniques for his artistic creations. Much of his early work explored the concept of interstitial spaces. During his New York City years, he often relied on a limited color palette of black, white, and gray. In recent years in, he delved headfirst into the use of color and created a series “Wrestling with Color”. An important creative phase for Mr. Montreuil involved both paintings that demanded a very short completion time and great spontaneity and art pieces representing very precise and time-consuming assembly. Mr. Montreuil’s works can be found at The National Gallery in Washington, D.C., Yale University in New Haven, CT, The Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford CT, The Witherspoon Museum in Greensboro, NC, The Rourke Museum in Moorhead MN, The Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, NM, and in private collections.
