"MEDLEY"
Nolan Winkler’s 2025 exhibit, having no common theme in the works, is called MEDLEY.
The main things that inspire her are the music she listens to in the studio (Future Islands or Bob Dylan); the poetry she reads and often, the ‘accidents’ that happen with the paint in the beginning stages of paintings. She has been painting for so many years that she appreciates these ‘accidents’ and takes advantage of them to guide and inspire her to the finish.
She tries not to expound any philosophies in her work, at least not mindfully. She hopes the viewers will question themselves. She gives no answers. Her titles tend to lead the viewer to what she may have been feeling, but from there they are on their own.

Artist’s Statement:
I spent my early childhood on the desert island of Aruba and returned frequently for family vacations. As a 20-year old I spent most of 1975 touring the Australian continent in an old VW van, sketchpad and watercolors in hand. I return often for my art; in fact, I’ll be back in that “Sunburnt Land” during the last days of this show. In 2012 I moved to Las Cruces, NM, which is now my home. A good part of my life and the most formative years for my art have therefore been in the bright sun of desert and tropical environments. The selections for this “Solar Energy” exhibition reflect those influences...

... Those that live here in the Southwest know the relentless destructive forces of desert sun, wind, and deluge on all things, and the adaptions of nature to survive in that environment. We are witnessing the effects of climate change, with severe drought, accompanying fires, and fierce monsoon storms, when they do come. All of which tie to the sun’s power in some way, with that energy converted to weather drama. My work in this show highlights these forces, both here and in Australia. The sun itself brings harsh light and shadow, but also brilliant color. I’ve been struck by the cultural energy of graffiti art of the borderlands and included some of my abstracted photographs with this theme. We humans try to leave our mark, even as the desert wears it away. I thank RioBravoFineArt Gallery for the opportunity to share these experiences and my creative interpretations. Welcome and enjoy!
