Blanch Almquist
I struggle to begin. I close my eyes. Images of unknown origin flash behind my lids. Rhythmically they come without hesitation, an endless stream until I change my mind. I start. Concepts come from a divine space and are most often guided by the piece itself. I finish. The unique characteristics of natural fibers, and a mix of metal and fire continue to dare me. I struggle to begin again, a consistent echo.

Dave Barnett – Elephant Butte, New Mexico
TITLE: “ANEURYSM”
BIO: Dave Barnett obtained an M. A. in Painting in the late sixties at New Mexico Highlands University, where he was taught by the well-known artist Elmer Schooley. Ten years after graduating, Barnett gave up painting completely and began to focus on pottery instead. Clay was his medium for the subsequent 16 years. In 1994, Schooley recommended that Barnett view a show of Impressionist paintings at the Kimball Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. He has painted ever since. In describing his creative process, Barnett says that “I am a selfish painter, and must be very positive that what I am about to paint is a subject that has great appeal to me, or one with which I have actually had a visual encounter. It must also fit the style format to which I am accustomed.” For those people familiar with Barnett’s work, there is no limit on his style; his format is typically large fifty-inch by fifty-inch canvases. Barnett’s work is in the New Mexico State Capitol Building as part of the Capitol Art Collection.

TITLE: “Party Down!”
TECHNIQUE: Safety pins flip tops sequins buttons teapot top
BIO: Julia Masaoka – Artist’s Statement: “… I have been doing art for over forty years. I originally worked as an abstract landscape painter before transitioning to creating mixed media shrines and assemblages.
I’m fortunate to have had residencies at the Vermont art Center and the Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos.
I primarily work with metal, hardware and iconic images, using objects from scrap yards, thrift stores, and the desert - “Trashformation”- beauty from trash! Themes range from the sacred to the humorous, often with a sense of mystery. I am especially inspired by the art of Mexico and Outsider artists. I work intuitively and learn by experimenting, informed by the process of creating each piece“. Masaoka has exhibited in Carmel, CA, Vermont, and Asheville, NC as well as Truth or Consequences, NM.

Chantal is an entirely self taught painter and illustrator who derives inspiration from rhythms and scenes of nature, intimately exploring vulnerability as interpreted through a sensual gender fluid gaze. “They the Rainbow” is an intuitive exploration of color as an expression of the gender fluid identity of the artist. “They the Rainbow as above, as within, as I grow. I see me in the flowers, I hear myself in the rustling of the leaves. I am everything.”

BIO: Val Wilkes’ first job in a movie theater is where she became fascinated with filmmaking. She went on to work in film and TV in New York City for two decades. As a film/video tech, she also installed high art video in the ‘80s and ‘90s, many involving international travel.
In the twenty aught years, in Portland, Oregon, Val’s contractor work drew on her carpentry skills, and when she relocated to the desert southwest, a run-down vintage motel became her next restoration project. After a lifetime of helping other artists, Val has recently started creating her own paintings and drawings.

ROBERTO ORTIZ -
Truth or Consequences, New Mexico
TITLE: “Sand Dunes Realness!”
TECHNIQUE: mixed media, found objects
BIO: The sand dunes up Turtle Back mountain are very beautiful to observe yet when you actually approach them you start to notice all of the trash left behind by those that visit it. So much beauty and so much trash.
So my mannequin is a representation of the dunes and the trash that’s there while converting it into its own beauty!
Created from more than 40 beer cans I found. It also has natural elements like sand and bullet casings and broken glass found in the dunes!
